The RTI Act does extend to private bodies but in a
limited manner. First, wherever the private body is substantially financed by
govt funds, the private body itself becomes a public authority and inforamtion
can be asked directly from the private body. Second is a situation where the
private body is under control of any govt authority under any existing law of
the country. In such a situation the private body does not itself become a
public authority. However its information can be obtained from tbe govt
authority controlling this private organisation. Also, in this situation, only
that inforamtion of this private body can be sought which that govt authority
already possesses or can obtain under law.
